Administration of computer systems

Update maintains a number of computer systems for various purposes. Some are part of our main system, which provides user accounts for our members, runs services such as this web site, and serves our terminal room.

This main system is geographically divided into two parts: the computer room and the terminal room. The terminal room, affectionately known as T-salen, houses terminals and workstations and is open for members and visitors, and allows users to log into our own systems as well as those of the Department of Information Technology.

The computer room is where all our server computers are located. It is a proper computer facility with cooling, raised floor, and three-phase electricity. Access to this room is only extended to the systems administrators, but they will usually be happy to show you around.

Other than this main system, Update also maintains several larger historical computers which can be booted up on demand. This is an important part of the activity of the club, and provides plenty of opportunity for interested members to learn about computer history through first-hand experience with older computer systems and their maintenance.

Servers in our computer room

Psilocybe - Debian Unstable/x86

This is Update's current main login server. It is a PC with two 2.6 GHz Xeon processors and 10 GB of RAM. Admin is psilocybe-admin@update.uu.se.

Wasabi - NetBSD/x86

This is the file system server for the workstations in the terminal room. Dell Poweredge 2650. Admin is X86-NetBSD-Admin@update.uu.se.

Tricholoma - Debian/x86_64

Our new main login server. PC, 2x Intel Xeon E5620 2.4 GHz, 24 GB RAM. Admin is Admin@update.uu.se.

Salvia - NetBSD/x86

Builds packages for Wasabi and the terminal room. Dell Poweredge 2650. Admin is X86-NetBSD-Admin@update.uu.se.

Tempo/Iltempo - Debian/x86

The new incarnation of our main non-login server, Tempo. Dell Poweredge 2650. News, Kom, LDAP, DNS, NIS, and various other services. Admin is tempo-admin@update.uu.se.

Galerina - NetBSD/x86

IPv6 router. Dell Poweredge 2650. Admin is Galerina-Admin@update.uu.se.

Extempo - Debian/x86

This is the retired old Tempo, renamed to Extempo. PC, 2x Intel Celeron 466 MHz, 256 MB RAM and a multitude of ATA disks mounted with cable ties and duct tape.

Workstations in our terminal room

Amanita - FreeBSD/x86

This PC has an AMD Athlon 2000+, 256 MB RAM, and an NVidia GeForce 4200Ti graphics card. Admin is Emil.

Anis, Basilika, Humle, Kanel, Kardemumma, Kummin, Lakrits, Oregano, Peppar - NetBSD/x86

Dell Optiplex PCs with Pentium IV 1.8GHz and 512-768 MB RAM. They function as X terminals and allow login to our main Linux servers and the IT department's Solaris servers (for students), and local workstation login into NetBSD. Admin is X86-NetBSD-Admin@update.uu.se.

Donut - DECserver 200/MC

Terminal server with two connected terminals: a VT320 b/w text terminal and a Tektronix 4014-1 storage tube vector graphics terminal, supported in gnuplot with the command set term tek40xx. These terminals may be used for LAT login to our main systems.

Interesting machines in the terminal room

Butlerelfia - Slackware/x86

This machine can be used to play music in our terminal room with the command kakrafoon (1). Volume is controlled by telnetting to mixer.update.uu.se. Admin is Johannes.

Elsa

This Digital Equipment PDP-12 with 8 KW RAM and two LINCtape drives for storage is on permanent display in the terminal room. It is a 12 bit machine, and the model was introduced in 1969.

Emulators

Tina - TOPS-20/PDP-10

Tina is not AIDA. TOPS-20 on emulated hardware. Connect with telnet tina.update.uu.se. Admin is Victor.

UP - ITS/PDP-10

UP is running ITS on emulated hardware. Check its status, or connect here, but please wait for the applet to download. (You can also use a standalone Supdup client.) Admin is Victor.

MIM - RSX-11PLUS/PDP-11

RSX-11PLUS on emulated hardware. This is an emulation of our actual PDP-11/70 Magica, which can not be kept permanently online. Login with telnet mim.update.uu.se. Administrator is Bqt.

Larger computers in the computer room

These are our currently installed and operational mini computers. Unfortunately, we can not currently keep them continually running, but they may be booted up by the turn of a key.

Krille - NetBSD/VAX

Digital VAX 8650, used mainly for NetBSD testing and open for login whenever it is up. This is the largest computer currently in our computer room. Can also boot VMS or ULTRIX. Admin is bqt.

Magica - RSX-11PLUS/PDP-11

This PDP-11/70 is probably the one of our historical computers the our members have spent that most time together servicing, since the old-fashioned technology makes it particularly suited for manual troubleshooting and repair. Currently, this machine is available in emulated form as mim.update.uu.se, open for telnet login. Admin for Magica is bqt.

Sigge - OpenVMS/VAX

OpenVMS 7.3 on a VAX 7000. Admin is bqt.

Warsaw - Solaris/Sparc64

Sun Enterprise 10000 with 56 UltraSPARC-II processors and 54 GB of RAM. One installed domain (Ran.Update.UU.SE) running Solaris 10. Admins are Sandberg and vol.
