Joining Update

Anyone who studies or works at Uppsala University or SLU in Uppsala is eligible to become a member of Update.

Others can become members after applying. This is highly unusual, and granting of such memberships is only normally done twice per year, by a club meeting. If you want to submit such an application, it should be sent to us on paper to our snail mail address. That is not by email. The address is found here.

In either case, membership is per calendar year.

What does it cost?

There is a membership fee, determined annually by the autumn meeting for the following year. For 2011, this fee is 120 SEK for the full year, and for 2012, the fee is 144 SEK.

• When joining, you may choose one of the following two alternatives:
  • Pay the full fee for membership until the end of the current year, or
  • Pay only for the remaining part of the year, 1/12 of the full fee for each remaining month, on the condition that you also pay in advance for next year. (This is mostly to encourage new students to join during the autumn semester)
• As a member, you pay for each full calendar year.

Example: If you have just started your first year at the university and want to join Update in August 2011, you can either simply pay 120 SEK for the remaining four months of 2011, or you can pay 40 SEK for 2011 (10 SEK per month), plus 144 SEK for 2012, for a total of 184 SEK for sixteen months. We recommend you choose the latter alternative.

How do I join?

Assuming you fulfill the requirements mentioned above, you need to do two things:

• Provide us with your personal data
• Pay the membership fee

Personal data:

• Your full name
• Your address
• What you study or where you work
• Email address or telephone number
• What you want for your username. The most typical form of usernames is the first name or the first name plus the initial of the last name. Thus if George Boole wanted to join, he might choose george or georgeb. You may choose any name you like, though, given that it's not taken.
• Initial password (optional) - at least 8 characters, not just letters. You can leave this out and an administrator will contact you about the password.

Membership fee:

The fee should be paid to Plusgiro account number 98 01 45-7. Make sure that the payment can be readily identified by including your name and the text "new member" in the message.
