It takes a while before you can sort out the various visual
impressions you get upon entering this long, low building. The
building has only one room, which is painted in a darkish colour,
giving the place a snug but not gloomy atmosphere. It is divided into
smaller units by moveable screens, to give the game-players houed
here the semblance of privacy while maintaining ease of movement
around the building for people who wish to be spectators rather than
players themselves.
People play board games around several of the large tables spread out
around the room. In one corner, five or six people sit around a round
table lit by candles, playing a role playing game. The games keeper
is striding around the table, intent upon his task to make the story
the others are playing come to life. Another corner houses a group of
merry people who are making up poetry on the spot, playing word games
and, bizarrely, taking it in turns to name stations on the London
Underground. Along one of the walls stand computer terminals with
different games running on them, their screens lighing up the areas
around. Feel free to come in and play!
War games
I'm not a big wargamer myself, but I'm very fond of the general idea
of a game which lasts for hour upon hour, week upon week. If only I
had more time...
One wall of the room is covered with maps and little cardboard
counters. A group of men is standing in front of it, pondering the
status of Europe in the late thirties. They are playing World in
Flames with about half a dozen added modules. Follow their progress
on the "Final
Countdown" Campain Report!
Tom Wham
Gameography
Tom Wham is the maker of The
Great Khan Game, Mertwig's Maze (both by TSR) and The
Awful Green Things From Outer Space (Steve Jackson Games). I love
his games, and especially the incredible illustrations he makes.
Mad
Elf's problem page for RPG characters
If your role playing character is suffering from any kind of problem
that doesn't go away by letting him/her heal for 2d6 days, s/he might
want to check this... different... page.
The Lord of
the Rings Board Game
Oh yay! Here is something that combines my liking of board games with
my passion for Tolkien... and it's a fun game, too.

I have only played Ultima III, and I enjoy it immensely.

MUDs
MUD is the abbreviation for Multi User Dungeon (or Dimension, as some
would have it). A MUD is a little like a role playing game; there is
a world containing many different places to explore, quests to solve
and monsters to slay. You create a character, assign her or him a
race, a name and perhaps a family or guild/occupation. Then you are
ready to enter a new universe. The MUD can be entered by a large
number of players at the same time. Usually you can chat freely with
any other player in the dungeon, which makes the game a social place
to meet your friends in as well as a game. Different MUDs have
different policies about chatting, though. I am a coder at one MUD
and play a couple of others off and on.

Split
Infinity's Home Page
After playing MUDs for a couple of years, I got the opportunity to
become a coder, and later an arch, at Split Infinity. This MUD is
very new, and opened to players fairly recently. Bugs are still being
found and things are changed once in a while; but it is a nice and
friendly place with a good, original concept, some very good finished
areas, and a number of others being written still. My Split Infinity
character is called Brigid, and although I can't spend much time on
the MUD these days, I do recommend you to log
in at Split Infinity!
VargonMUD's Home Page
Vargon is a strange place, with the largest amount of crazy emotes
I've ever seen anywhere, and lots of friendly players. I don't play
it as much as I used to (which was a *lot*!) but I do pop by
occasionally, and then I'm known as Brigid of the Toymakers. In my
opinion, VargonMUD is a great place to start mudding at, it being an
old, large MUD with many, many areas; several of them designed
especially for newbies.
Go on, play VargonMUD!
